This course is for ambulance driving instructors wishing to update or develop their teaching and assessment skills to Diploma level.
On this course you will learn:
Enhanced knowledge, behaviours, understanding and skills required to instruct, coach, support and assess learners in routine and emergency response ambulance demonstration driving
Knowledge and understanding of driving legislation, regulation, standards and agreed ways of working to ensure the driver is safe and competent as set out in the requirements stated in the High-Speed Driver Training Competencies.
How human factors can influence attitude to risk.
On this course, you will focus on the completion of the Ambulance Driver Risk Index [ADR], developing a working knowledge of the Goals for Driver Education [GDE] framework and completion of the Driving Instructor Ambulance Driver Risk Index to measure progression and development.
Which DERADI course is right for me?
Depending on your existing qualifications, we have various options:
Full DERADI course: split across 19 weeks
There are 6 mandatory units you must complete. We teach this in 3 sections:
7 weeks of training
4 weeks of supervised practice (instruction on a L3 CERAD Course)
8 weeks of consolidated practice.
Am I eligible for this DERADI course?
In order to attend this course, you have to meet strict eligibility requirements.
You must:
Hold a full UK/EU driving licence for the class of vehicle to be instructed on
Have no more than six endorsement points
Hold a Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving (RPL may be possible, email us)
Hold, or be registered on and actively working towards, the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, its equivalent or higher
Hold, or be registered on and actively working towards, the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement or one of the legacy qualifications (D32/33 or A1)
How much does the DERADI course cost?
The full DERADI course costs £8,000 + VAT. This includes all tuition, materials, practice sessions and exam costs. You'll receive full support throughout your course. For prices of RPL and Police Conversion courses, please contact us.

RPL Conversion (short course): 5 days
This course for existing ambulance driving instructors with recognised qualifications and prior experience. It can be completed in 5 days, and will include presentations and a portfolio of work.
Police Conversion course:
This course is for experienced and already qualified Police Advanced Driving Instructors.

L3CERAD (Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving)
L3CAVA (Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement)
L4CET (Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training)
DVSA ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) qualification may be required to deliver L3CERAD. This is not a requirement of the L4DERADI but is a requirement if you wish to teach in B category vehicles.

This qualification is internally assessed and internally quality assured by St John Ambulance staff and externally quality assured by FutureQuals External Quality Advisors.
Full course
This course is run over 19 weeks, with a combination of teaching, self-guided learning, and practice sessions.
The course modules are split over 19 weeks:
173 hours of training (split over 7 weeks),
211 hours of self-taught, Guided Learning hours,
150 hours of supervised practice and 300 hours of consolidated practice.
Throughout the course, you will be asked to submit a portfolio of evidence, take written theory examples and take multiple-choice assessments. There is also an evening driving component which must be completed.
RPL Conversion (short course)
You will need to demonstrate your existing skills, including presentations and a portfolio of work.
Support with your learning
All our trainers are highly skilled specialist instructors, able to adapt their teaching style to meet each learner’s needs. We offer individual, end-to-end support to each learner; this might include extra help with portfolio work, getting the most out of the self-taught Guided Learning Hours, or assistance with arranging placements to practice your newly acquired skills.
Certification
Successful delegates will receive a certificate from FutureQuals, valid for 5 years. After this, you will need to take a requalifying assessment.
